On Monday 11 November 2019 ITV Border visited Headway North Cumbria to film for a report they were to broadcast on the fundraising efforts of two of our members – Helen Wilson and Adrian Hope. Independently of each other, Helen and Adrian have decided to undertake sponsored swims in support of the branch and, between them, hope to raise in excess of £1,500.
The day’s filming started at DW Fitness First Carlisle where Helen and Adrian were filmed training in the swimming pool. Following this they were both interviewed, with Chair, Andrew Kirkpatrick, during our Day Centre session at the New Waterton Hall.
During his interview Adrian spoke of the consequences of an acquired brain injury and the challenges of coming to terms with the fact that he was no longer able to do many of the the things that he had previously been able to do.
Helen spoke of the impact that having an ABI can have on family and friends. She also discussed the challenges of living with hidden disability and the need to constantly adapt to compensate for the impact of her brain injury.
Andrew praised the efforts of Adrian and Helen and the importance of fundraising to ensure that Headway North Cumbria can continue to undertake its work supporting those affected by brain injuries, their families and carers. He also stressed the importance of such activities in building confidence and helping in the rehabilitation of those with acquired brain injury.
On Tuesday 12 November ITV Border broadcast a short version of their report during their Morning Headlines slot and Lunchtime News report with the full report being included in the regional news programme – Lookaround – at 6pm. ITV Border have very kindly provided us with a copy of the full report which is available to view below:
