DESCRIPTION:Branch VOICE is a discussion forum for all branch volunteers to come together and share and collaborate. It is an additional engagement mechanism to other regional meetings and is just for branches. \nThe key purpose of the Branch VOICE group is to: \n•       engage with Branch volunteers across Headway to capture ideas\, issues and learning\, \n•       help shape the volunteering experience and branch development\, \n•       act as a sounding board and to support the work of Headway\, \n•       represent the interests of members and people living in their communities with brain injuries. \nMeetings will be held online\, over Zoom\, every 2 months on a Wednesday early evening.  They are open to any branch volunteer or committee member that may wish to attend.  There is no need to register and no need to commit to attending each month.  The Branch secretary can provide a link to the meeting to any of our volunteers or committee members that may wish to attend.

SUMMARY:Watchtree Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Watchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows\, old and new woodland\, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats this a place for everyone.  Wildlife is perfectly at home here and we have abundant Brown Hares\, the European protected Great crested Newt\, numerous breeding birds\, interesting moths\, stunning butterflies\, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore.  The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here.  More recently\, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains\, pumps and  containment walls.  So\, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven. \n\n \nThe Watchtree Wheelers provide cycle hire for all visitors to the Reserve and the huge collection of standard and adapted cycles means there is something for everybody.  You could cruise along in a KMX kart getting down to the same level as the hares and the stoats or hop on a trike so you can take in the landscape views over the tops of the bustling hedgerows. \n \nOn 20 April 2026 we will visit Watchtree Nature Reserve where members will have the opportunity to walk or cycle on the various pathways that run through this beautiful wildlife area.   \nWe will meet at Watchtree at 1pm.  Attendees are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy before\, during or after their walk/ride or can buy refreshments at the on-site Café. \nCost will be £2 a head\, payable in advance. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to participate. \nTo read a report and view photos from the last occasion that we visited as branch (16 June 2025) please go to our post entitled Watchtree Nature Reserve – June 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteers’ Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK.  The celebration starts on the first Monday in June every year.  It’s a chance to recognise\, celebrate\, and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to their local communities\, the voluntary sector\, and society as a whole.  This year it will run from the 1st to the 7th June.   \nTo truly celebrate them Headway UK would love to receive quotes\, stories and case studies about Headway volunteers and the difference they make in their communities.  Some of these will be featured in the summer edition of Headway News\, as well as featuring on the Headway UK website and social media during Volunteers’ Week.  \nShould any of our members wish to participate please let the Secretary know.  She will require contribution(s) by 26 April 2026 at the very latest\, so that she can submit them to Headway UK in good time. \nMore information about Volunteers’ Week 2026 will be provided in due course.

SUMMARY:Carers Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability\, illness\, mental health condition\, addiction\, or who needs extra help as they grow older.  It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support. \nCarers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring\, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.  The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to provide support for carers\, run activities\, highlight the vital role carers play in our communities and draw attention to just how important caring is.  This year it will run from the 8th to the 14th June.  \nHeadway UK knows that caring for someone can be very challenging and wants carers to know that their individual worth is recognised\, very much valued and that they are not alone. \nAs it has done for the past couple of years Headway UK will be running a Carers Week poetry competition to highlight the invaluable contributions of carers across the UK.  People with an acquired brain injury are invited to write a poem\, haiku or ditty that demonstrates their appreciation of their carers\, whilst celebrating the positive impact that they have on their life.  Alternatively\, the entry can be from a carer creating a poem from their perspective too. \nThere will be a first\, second and third prize and the winners will feature in the Headway News magazine summer edition as well as on the Headway website.   \nDuring Carers Week in June Headway UK will feature some of the poems on social media\, so videos of individuals performing their poems are welcome too\, if they’re happy to share. \nIf poetry isn’t your thing\, Headway are also collecting quotes from people with an acquired brain injury about their carers.  Some of these will feature in the summer edition of Headway News\, as well as featuring on our website and social media during Carers Week. \nThe closing date for the competition is Sunday 3rd May 2026.  If you wish to enter this competition please let the Secretary know in plenty of time

DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria will hold its Annual General Meeting at 1:30 pm on Monday 22 March 2027.\n\n\n\n  \nThe Agenda is as follows: \n1.     Approval of the minutes of last AGM (30 March 2026) \n2.     Annual Report from the Chairman \n3.     Election of Officers \n4.     Approval of Accounts for 2026 \n5.     Planned Activities for 2027 \n6.     Any Other Business \n  \nThe Committee is looking to involve individuals who are interested in furthering the work of the Branch and shaping its future.  If you wish to become a committee member\, or have a recommendation for someone that you feel would be suitable\, then please let the Secretary know in advance of the AGM.
