SUMMARY:Watchtree Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Watchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows\, old and new woodland\, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats this a place for everyone.  Wildlife is perfectly at home here and we have abundant Brown Hares\, the European protected Great crested Newt\, numerous breeding birds\, interesting moths\, stunning butterflies\, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore.  The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here.  More recently\, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains\, pumps and  containment walls.  So\, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven. \n\n \nThe Watchtree Wheelers provide cycle hire for all visitors to the Reserve and the huge collection of standard and adapted cycles means there is something for everybody.  You could cruise along in a KMX kart getting down to the same level as the hares and the stoats or hop on a trike so you can take in the landscape views over the tops of the bustling hedgerows. \n \nOn 20 April 2026 we will visit Watchtree Nature Reserve where members will have the opportunity to walk or cycle on the various pathways that run through this beautiful wildlife area.   \nWe will meet at Watchtree at 1pm.  Attendees are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy before\, during or after their walk/ride or can buy refreshments at the on-site Café. \nCost will be £2 a head\, payable in advance. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to participate. \nTo read a report and view photos from the last occasion that we visited as branch (16 June 2025) please go to our post entitled Watchtree Nature Reserve – June 2025.

Co-ordinated by the Headway UK Branch Development Officer it is an additional engagement mechanism to other regional meetings and is just for branches. \nThe key purpose of the Branch VOICE group is to: \n•       engage with Branch volunteers across Headway to capture ideas\, issues and learning\, \n•       help shape the volunteering experience and branch development\, \n•       act as a sounding board and to support the work of Headway\, \n•       represent the interests of members and people living in their communities with brain injuries. \nMeetings will be held online\, over Zoom\, every 2 months on a Wednesday early evening.  They are open to any branch volunteer or committee member that may wish to attend.  There is no need to register and no need to commit to attending each month.  The Branch secretary can provide a link to the meeting to any of our volunteers or committee members that may wish to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria will be lunching at the Pizza Hut\, Unit 5 London Road Retail Park\, London Road\, Carlisle\, Cumbria\, CA1 2PD on Monday 7 July 2025.  We will meet there from 12:45 for lunch at 13:00. \nCost is £10 a head\, payable in advance\, for the unlimited buffet bundle which comprises: \n\nPizza in a variety of flavours such as Margherita\, Veggie\, Veggie Hot\, Pepperoni\, Hawaiian\, Chicken\, BBQ Americano.\nPasta – creamy four cheese & broccoli or tangy tomato.\n\n \n\nThe Unlimited Salad Bar. Fill up your bowl from a range of items including: crisp lettuce\, juicy cherry tomatoes\, refreshing cucumber\, crunchy carrot\, tangy red onion\, creamy coleslaw\, crunchy sweetcorn\, tortilla chips\, scrumptious beetroot\, spicy jalapeños\, vegan bacon flavour bits.\nBottomless drink – unlimited Pepsi Max\, Diet Pepsi\, 7up Zero\, Tango Orange\, Tango Apple or Squash from the drinks station.\nIce cream fountain – create your own ice cream with sauces and sprinkles.\n\n \nMenu items\, including drinks\, not falling within the unlimited buffet bundle offer will need to be ordered and paid for separately by the individual ordering them. \nTo participate members will need to sign up for the event with the Secretary.  This can be done at the Day Centre\, by e-mail\, text or telephone.  The cost of £10 is payable in advance and can be given to the Secretary or the Treasurer at the Day Centre. \nThe Day Centre will be closed.

SUMMARY:Watchtree Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Watchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows\, old and new woodland\, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats this a place for everyone.  Wildlife is perfectly at home here and we have abundant Brown Hares\, the European protected Great crested Newt\, numerous breeding birds\, interesting moths\, stunning butterflies\, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore.  The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here.  More recently\, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains\, pumps and  containment walls.  So\, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven. \n\n \nThe Watchtree Wheelers provide cycle hire for all visitors to the Reserve and the huge collection of standard and adapted cycles means there is something for everybody.  You could cruise along in a KMX kart getting down to the same level as the hares and the stoats or hop on a trike so you can take in the landscape views over the tops of the bustling hedgerows. \n \nOn 16 June 2025 we will visit Watchtree Nature Reserve where members will have the opportunity to walk or cycle on the various pathways that run through this beautiful wildlife area.   \nWe will meet at Watchtree at 1pm.  Attendees are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy before\, during or after their walk/ride or can buy refreshments at the on-site Café. \nCost will be £2 a head\, payable in advance. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to participate. \nTo read a report and view photos from the last occasion that we visited as branch (11 June 2024) please go to our post entitled Watchtree Nature Reserve – June 2024.

SUMMARY:Carers Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability\, illness\, mental health condition\, addiction\, or who needs extra help as they grow older.  It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support. \nCarers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring\, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.  The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to provide support for carers\, run activities\, highlight the vital role carers play in our communities and draw attention to just how important caring is.  This year it will run from the 9th to the 15th June.   \nHeadway UK wants carers to know that their individual worth is recognised\, very much valued and that they are not alone.  In recognition of this Headway UK is launching a competition for people with an acquired brain injury to write a poem\, haiku or ditty that demonstrates their appreciation of their carers\, whilst celebrating the positive impact that they have on their life.  Alternatively\, the entry can be from a carer creating a poem from their perspective too.  There will be a first\, second and third prize and the winners will feature in the Headway News magazine summer edition as well as on the Headway UK website.  During Carers Week poems will also be featured on social media.  \nIf poetry isn’t your thing\, Headway will also be also collecting quotes from people with an acquired brain injury about their carers.  Some of these will be featured in the summer edition of Headway News\, as well as featuring on the Headway UK website and social media during Carers Week.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteers’ Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK.  The celebration starts on the first Monday in June every year.  It’s a chance to recognise\, celebrate\, and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to their local communities\, the voluntary sector\, and society as a whole.  This year it will run from the 2nd to the 8th June.   \nTo truly celebrate them Headway UK would love to receive quotes\, stories and case studies about Headway volunteers and the difference they make in their communities. Some of these will be featured in the summer edition of Headway News\, as well as featuring on the Headway UK website and social media during Volunteers’ Week.  \nShould any of our members wish to participate please let the Secretary know.  She will require contribution(s) by 28 April 2025 at the very latest\, so that she can submit them to Headway UK in good time.

SUMMARY:Action for Brain Injury Week - On a Good Day
DESCRIPTION:ABI Week provides an annual platform on which Headway can raise awareness of brain injury and the work it does to support those affected. \nEach year\, Headway UK launches a new campaign during ABI Week\, encouraging and supporting the Headway network to participate. \nIn 2025\, ABI Week will be between the 19th – 25th May with Hats for Headway Day taking place on Friday 16th May 2025. \n  \nCampaign Name:  On a good day  \nOn a good day will be a campaign that highlights the hidden\, fluctuating and unpredictable nature of brain injury. \nThe campaign will highlight the gap between capabilities on a good day versus a bad day – showcasing how simple tasks can be achievable one day but impossible the next\, it aims to foster understanding and empathy for those navigating the often-invisible struggles of brain injury. \n  \nAs part of the campaign Headway UK are hoping to feature images and statements from brain injury survivors.  The idea is that participants are invited to share selfie images of themselves on a good day (where they are feeling well) and also on a not so good day (where their brain injury symptoms are having a huge impact).  Those chosen will be posted to Headway’s website and social media feeds during ABI week. \nThe images can be taken in selfie mode using a mobile phone\, or be taken by a family member\, friend or carer.  The selfie should be accompanied by ‘good day / bad day’ statements to help highlight how brain injury symptoms can fluctuate.  The statements will be structured as follows: \nOn a good day I… (insert how you feel\, tasks you can do / how life feels.  It can be about the physical or emotional / cognitive sides of brain injury) \nOn a bad day I… (insert how you feel\, tasks you can do / how life feels.  It can be about the physical or emotional / cognitive sides of brain injury) \nAny Headway North Cumbria member who feels that they wish to take part in this campaign should discuss it with Natalie Simpson who will co-ordinate submissions on behalf of the branch members.  Please share your good day/bad day selfies with her and discuss what you wish to have included in the statement.  A consent form permitting Headway UK to use the images and statements for up to five years will also be required.  Good day/bad day images and statements need to be submitted to Headway UK by 7 March 2025.

SUMMARY:Street Party and Karaoke
DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria will hold a street party in the main hall of the New Waterton Hall on 12 May 2025.  There will also be the opportunity for singing and dancing with karaoke.  We will meet from 1pm and hold our street party between 1:30pm and 3pm.   \nIn the spirit of the traditional street party\, and in order to keep costs down\, we are looking to our volunteers and members to bring food to share with others.  This is not obligatory\, but if you do wish to contribute something to the party please let the Secretary know that you will be doing so\, and give an idea of what it is that you would like to provide.  This will help ensure that we match what is being offered to the number of people that we expect to attend. \nIn order to ensure that we do not under-cater or over-cater for the event it would be great to have an early understanding of how many members might be attending.  Those members that would like to participate are invited to let the Secretary know as soon as possible.
