DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria will be holding its Christmas Lunch in the Auctioneer Suite at The Auctioneer\, Rosehill Estate\, Carlisle\, CA1 2RW on Monday 6 December 2021.  We will meet from 12:30pm for lunch at 1pm. \nThe three course lunch will be followed by coffee and mince pies.  Attendees will need to choose their main course in advance of the event\, but will be able to select their starter and dessert on the day.  The menu is as follows: \n \nA cash bar will be available. \nThe cost is £7 a head\, payable in advance. \nMembers wishing to attend should sign up for this popular event at the Day Centre (please see Natalie or Julian)\, by e-mailing headwaynorthcumbria@yahoo.com\, or phoning the Headway North Cumbria Helpline on 07508 111834.  Places can be secured by payment of £7 along with confirmation of main course – beef\, turkey\, salmon or nut roast.  Any special dietary requirements should be notified to Natalie or Julian at the time of booking. \nTo view some photos from our last branch Christmas Dinner in 2019 please visit the gallery and the photo album called Christmas Lunch 2019.

DESCRIPTION:  \n“Our Hollywood Bowl centre in Carlisle is the place to be.  With state-of-the-art bowling lanes and a family-friendly environment\, you’re guaranteed to be bowled over! \nWith 24 lanes to bowl along\, an exclusive VIP area\, an American themed diner\, a relaxing bar and a fun-packed amusements area; what are you waiting for?  Head down to our Carlisle centre today!” \n  \nOn Monday 11 October 2021 we will be ten pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl (formerly AMF Bowling) in Carlisle.  This is a rescheduling of the session that we had intended to run on 12 October 2020\, but had to postpone due to the coronavirus pandemic. \nWe will meet at 12:45 with the first ball down the lane at 13:00. \nCost to participate will be £2 a head and attendees will have the opportunity to bowl two games of 10 frames. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to participate. \nWe normally bowl twice a year but due to the coronavirus have been unable to do so since February 2020.  To view some photos from our last visit to AMF Bowling please visit the gallery and the photo album called AMF Bowling – 3 February 2020.

SUMMARY:Re-opening of Headway North Cumbria Day Centre
DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria will be re-opening its Day Centre on 6 September 2021 after 18 months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  \nThe venue will be the same – The New Waterton Hall\, Warwick Square\, Carlisle\, CA1 1LB – but the timings will be slightly different – we will open at 1:30 pm and close at 3:00 pm. \n  \nIf you are intending to use the Day Centre\, particularly if you plan on coming on 6 September 2021\, it is requested that: \n–     you let the Secretary know that you will be coming.  This is important because if we know how many people are coming we can lay out the room in the best way possible to allow us to keep people safe. \n–     you tell the Secretary what your vaccination status is.  Members are not obliged to provide this information\, nor will entry to the Day Centre be dependant on whether members have been vaccinated or not.  The intent is to try and establish the level of immunisation within the Headway community since this may influence the speed at which we are able to relax precautionary measures and move towards a more open setting. \n  \nMore information can be found here: \n\nHeadway North Cumbria Day Centre to Re-open on 6 September 2021 \n\nFurther details can be obtained by e-mailing the Secretary at headwaynorthcumbria@yahoo.com or calling/texting the helpline on 07508 111834.

DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria is encouraged by the gradual opening of society following the COVID-19 lockdown however it believes that it is right to maintain an abundance of caution when it comes to supporting vulnerable adults who may have underlying health conditions.  As a consequence it has been decided to postpone our trip to Platty+ until 2022. \n  \nPlatty+ is a small friendly family run water sports centre based on the shores of Derwentwater experienced in dealing with individuals and groups\, children and adults (including those with special needs)\, families with young children\, corporate groups and school parties. \nOn Saturday 10 July 2021 Headway North Cumbria will participate in water sports in the Lake District.  Attendees will be offered a two hour programme in which they will be given the opportunity to go on the water in a canoe\, kayak\, or dragon boat. \n \nDetails\, including costings\, will be published in due course. \nThis is an annual event.  We had planned to run this event in July 2020 but had to postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  To view some photos from our last visit in 2019 please visit the gallery and the photo album called Platty 2019. \n \n

SUMMARY:Headway North Cumbria Quiz
DESCRIPTION:Headway North Cumbria runs a quiz over ZOOM every other Monday commencing at 16:00 and running for about an hour.  The quiz is hosted by our Treasurer\, Julian Simpson. \nThe quiz will comprise 20 general knowledge questions\, each of which will have four possible answers to choose from.  One point for each correct answer.  Maximum score = 20 \n  \nThis week’s quiz will follow a format borrowed from the TV quiz shows “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and “Impossible”.  The quiz will run in two parts: \n \nPart 1 – This will essentially be 2/3rds of a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” quiz.  There will be 10 millionaire style questions in increasing levels of difficulty from 100 points to 32\,000 points.  Just answer the question as you would for a normal quiz whilst trying to complete series of correct answers millionaire style. \n \nPart 2 – 10 questions in the style of the quiz show “Impossible”. For those unfamiliar with “Impossible” the answers are of three different type; correct wrong and impossible. The impossible answers are distinguished by being inconsistent with the premise of the question.  In this version each question will have one correct answer\, two wrong answers and one impossible answer.  The idea is to try and find the correct answer but\, if not\, avoid selecting the impossible answer since this will cause you to lose a point ! \n  \nFor security reasons attendance at the meeting is by invitation only.  If you wish to attend please e-mail headwaynorthcumbria@yahoo.com or text or call our helpline on 07508 111834. \nFor those unfamiliar with ZOOM help with installing the application to your device can be provided.

SUMMARY:Hats for Headway
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, at the end of Action for Brain Injury week\, Headway runs a fundraising campaign to raise money to improve life after brain injury.  The campaign\, Hats for Headway\, asks supporters to wear weird and wacky hats and make a small donation of £2 to the charity. \nUnder normal circumstances Headway North Cumbria would run an event at the Day Centre in recognition of Hats for Headway.  Previously we have held a Teddy Bears’ Picnic\, a 40th Birthday Party and last year we celebrated Hats at Home for Headway with a Zoom meeting: \nhttp://headwaynorthcumbria.org.uk/2020/05/19/hats-at-home-for-headway-15-may-2020/ \n \nThis year we are encouraging our members and supporters to participate directly in Headway’s national campaign. \nAll that you need to do to be involved is to wear a hat with pride\, donate £2 to Headway by text\, and post a picture on social media using the hashtag #HatsForHeadway to show your support.  By posting your picture you will also be automatically entered in a competition for the “Best Individual Photo”. \nFor more details please visit the Headway UK website: \nhttps://www.headway.org.uk/about-headway/events-and-conferences/hats-for-headway-day/ \nA video made by Headway for last year’s campaign\, which remains valid for this year\, can be viewed below: \nhttp://headwaynorthcumbria.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Hats-for-Headway-2020.mp4\n  \nThose members and supporters that do decide to participate in Hats for Headway are invited to send a copy of any photos to the Secretary so that they can be compiled into a news article for the website.

SUMMARY:ABI Week 2021: A Life of Lockdown?
DESCRIPTION:Covid-19 has been tough on everyone. Repeated lockdowns have left people isolated and lonely\, often harming their mental wellbeing. \nBut imagine living every day of your life in isolation… \nThe effects of brain injury\, such as problems with memory\, information processing\, or speech\, compounded by a lack of understanding of this often hidden disability\, can leave survivors lacking the confidence to interact with society. \nThe theme of this year’s Action for Brain Injury Week is A life of lockdown?  and will focus on social isolation after brain injury\, a problem that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.   The campaign will aim to give a voice to survivors and carers to help them better explain to their friends and families the challenges they face as a result of brain injury.  As well as having an awareness-raising focus\, it will also have positive messages and tools to help people make a difference\, such as guides and top tips for friends of brain injury survivors and carers. \nAction for Brain Injury Week will run from 17-23 May 2021. \nFurther details will be released on the Headway UK website and social media in due course. \nHeadway North Cumbria will discuss A life of lockdown? during its Zoom meeting on Monday 24 May 2021.
