SUMMARY:Watchtree Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Watchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows\, old and new woodland\, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats this a place for everyone.  Wildlife is perfectly at home here and we have abundant Brown Hares\, the European protected Great crested Newt\, numerous breeding birds\, interesting moths\, stunning butterflies\, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore.  The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here.  More recently\, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains\, pumps and  containment walls.  So\, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven.\n\n \nThe Watchtree Wheelers provide cycle hire for all visitors to the Reserve and the huge collection of standard and adapted cycles means there is something for everybody.  You could cruise along in a KMX kart getting down to the same level as the hares and the stoats or hop on a trike so you can take in the landscape views over the tops of the bustling hedgerows. \n \nOn 10 June 2024 we will visit Watchtree Nature Reserve where members will have the opportunity to walk or cycle on the various pathways that run through this beautiful wildlife area.   \nWe will meet at Watchtree at 1pm.  Attendees are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy before\, during or after their walk/ride or can buy refreshments at the on-site Café. \nCost will be £2 a head\, payable in advance. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to participate. \nTo read a report and view photos from the last occasion that we visited as branch (12 June 2023) please do to our post entitled Watchtree Nature Reserve – June 2023

SUMMARY:Action for Brain Injury Week - A Life Re-written
DESCRIPTION:ABI Week provides an annual platform on which Headway can raise awareness of brain injury and the work it does to support those affected. \nEach year\, Headway UK launches a new campaign during ABI Week\, encouraging and supporting the Headway network to participate. \nIn 2024\, ABI Week will be between the 20th – 26th May with Hats for Headway Day taking place on Friday 17th May 2024. \n  \n2024 Campaign Name:  A life re-written \nA brain injury can happen to anyone\, at any time.  A life re-written\, will aim to raise awareness of brain injury by not only highlighting the impact it can have on individuals and families\, but also asking people to imagine the ‘what if’ scenario none of us like to consider. \nHeadway will be illustrating how easily life plans can be thrown into disarray.  It will tell those ‘sliding doors’ stories of lives changed in an instant\, asking survivors and families to paint a mental picture for others to visualise with the aim of connecting the general public to the impact of ABI. \nA life re-written is about identity after brain injury\, how survivors have experienced post-traumatic growth through a process of change. \nThe campaign will also give Headway the opportunity to detail how it has helped to rebuild lives after brain injury through the personal stories of brain injury survivors which will be central to the campaign.  It will chart positive examples of brain injury survivors who have experienced post-traumatic growth and successfully re-built their careers\, relationships and lives. Headway will also chart the realism of life post-brain injury and how positive outcomes aren’t always the norm. This would include the ripple effect on others\, for example how partners are affected\, how they also make life changes\, sacrifices and adjustments to their own goals and expectations. \n  \nHeadway has launched a new set of surveys to gather data and experiences for the campaign.   The two new surveys have been written to gather first-hand insight into thoughts and experiences around identity after brain injury.  One is for people with brain injury\, while the other is for families\, partners\, friends and carers of a brain injury survivor.  Each survey takes around 14 minutes to complete and can be done anonymously. \nIf you wish to participate please select your survey below: \n \n \n  \nThe results of the survey will be announced during ABI Week 2024 (20th – 26th May 2024).

SUMMARY:(no) Hats for Headway Street Party
DESCRIPTION:Hats for Headway Day is an annual fundraising event in which Headway invites anyone who wants to help improve life after brain injury to wear a wacky hat\, make a donation to Headway\, and post a picture on social media to show support.   It will be recognised this year on 17 May 2024. \nHeadway North Cumbria will hold our own event in the form of a street party which will be held in the main hall of the New Waterton Hall on 13 May 2024.  Whilst this is considered a Hats for Headway fundraising event there will be no expectation for attendees to wear a hat or any other item of fancy dress –  please come as you are.  We will meet from 1pm and hold our street party between 1:30pm and 3:30pm.  The format will be similar to that of the Street Party for the Coronation of King Charles III we held on 15 May 2023.  \nIn the spirit of the traditional street party\, and in order to keep costs down\, we are looking to our volunteers and members to bring food to share with others.  This is not obligatory\, but if you do wish to contribute something to the party please let the Secretary know that you will be doing so\, and give an idea of what it is that you would like to provide.  This will help ensure that we match what is being offered to the number of people that we expect to attend. \nIn order to ensure that we do not under-cater or over-cater for the event it would be great to have an early understanding of how many members might be attending.  Those members that would like to participate are invited to let the Secretary know as soon as possible. \nThis is a fundraising event so we would ask attendees to pay a minimum £5 donation to participate. \n  \nIf you are unable to attend the street party but wish to donate to the branch then please do so in the collection box that we have at the Day Centre or by contacting our Treasurer\, Julian\, through the Helpline – 07508 111834 – or by visiting our Just Giving page \n

SUMMARY:Carers Rights Day - Online Training for Family Carers
DESCRIPTION:Each year Carers UK promotes Carers Rights Day where we’re joined by hundreds of organisations and thousands of individuals raising awareness of caring\, helping to identify carers and signposting them to information\, advice and support. \nWhether someone has recently become a carer\, realised they have been caring for a while without support or has been caring for someone for many years\, it’s important they understand their rights and are able to access the support that is available to them whenever they need it. \nCarers Rights Day empowers carers with information and support. It helps them to feel confident asking for what they need and challenge things when their rights are not being met\, whether that be that in the workplace or education\, in accessing health or social care\, when interacting with other professionals or at home. \n  \n  \nOn Carers Rights Day\, Thursday 23rd November at 6.30-8pm\, Julie King\, Family Support Officer at Walkergate Park\, will be delivering an online training session for family carers via zoom. \nCarers Rights Day is a national day which happens in November each year.  It is about raising awareness of carers’ rights and entitlements\, to help you get the support you need. Wherever you are in your caring journey\, knowing your rights can help you to make informed decisions and feel more in control of your situation\, feel more confident asking for what you need and challenge things when your rights are not being met. \nThe short interactive session will cover: \n\nthe Care Act: what the law says about what you should expect from health and social care; including how to plan for an assessment so that you are able to access support and services that meet your family’s needs.\nrespite options and taking a break.\nrights in the workplace.\nmanaging someone’s affairs.\nother entitlements and services that you could find helpful in your caring role\n\nIf you are interested in participating please contcat the branch secretary
