SUMMARY:Street Party for Coronation of King Charles III
DESCRIPTION:Charles III became King immediately upon the death of his mother\, Elizabeth II\, on 8 September 2022.  The coronation of Charles III and his wife\, Camilla\, as King and Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms is set to take place on Saturday\, 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey.  A variety of ceremonial\, celebratory and community events will take place over the Coronation Weekend between Saturday 6 and Monday 8 May 2023. \nHeadway North Cumbria will hold our own celebration in the form of a street party which will be held in the main hall of the New Waterton Hall.  So as not to clash with other events over the Coronation Weekend we will hold our street party a week later – on Monday 15 May 2023.  We will meet from 1pm and hold our street party between 1:30pm and 3:30pm.  The format will be similar to that of the Platinum Jubilee Street Party we held on 6 June 2022 and will be free for our members to attend. \nIn order to ensure that we do not under-cater or over-cater for the event it would be great to have an early understanding of how many members might be attending.  Those members that would like to participate are invited to let the Secretary know as soon as possible. \nIn the spirit of street parties across the country\, and in order to keep costs down\, we are looking to our volunteers and members to bring food to share with others.  This is not obligatory\, but if you do wish to contribute something to the party please let the Secretary know that you will be doing so\, and give an idea of what it is that you would like to provide.  This will help ensure that we match what is being offered to the number of people that we expect to attend.

SUMMARY:Headway Fundraising Campaign - 12 Miles of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:What is it? \nThe 12 Miles of Christmas is a Headway UK fundraising initiative based on asking people to cover a distance of 12 miles\, in any number of creative and festive-themed ways.  It’s an excuse for people to have a bit of fun in the lead up to Christmas Day whilst raising money for Headway UK or their local branch of Headway.  The campaign went live on 1 November 2022 and Headway North Cumbria is one of a number of branches that have signed up to participate in this event. \nWhen is it? \n1st December – 25th December \nWho can take part? \nThere is no limit to the amount of people who can take part and it is open to everyone. People can take part individually or in teams. \nWhat will I need to do? \nThe idea is that participants will need to complete a distance of 12 miles in any manner that they like.  There is no need to get the running gear out (unless you want to) – you can get The 12 Miles of Christmas done by putting on a Christmas jumper\, going out for a walk\, delivering cards\, or even shopping for last-minute presents. \nHow much would it raise? \nThe campaign is being managed by Headway UK using the fundraising platform Give Penny.  It is hoped that each supporter taking part can raise a minimum of £150 but anything that supporters can raise will make a difference to the work undertaken by Headway. \nHow do I take part? \nIf you are interested in taking part and raising some money for Headway North Cumbria you have the option of having your own online fundraising page or joining “Team North-Cumbria” for which a fundraising page has already been set up on behalf of the branch.  Once set up you can then start fundraising in any way you like\, by asking friends and family to help either by donating or pledging an amount for the full activity. \nI don’t want to take part but do want to support those that do. \nA number of members and supporters of Headway North Cumbria have agreed to fundraise as Team “North-Cumbria”. They include Geoffrey who will be running 12 miles around the Eden District dressed as Father Christmas; Philip who will also be running 12 miles; Caroline and Simon who will both be walking 12 miles. \nIf you wish to support them you may do so by three methods: \n–    through the online giving page at Give Penny https://givepenny.com/nataliesimpson_the_12_miles_of_christmas \n–    by signing up on the sponsorship forms of one of the individuals taking part. \n–    by donating at the Day Centre or at the Christmas lunch. \nWhat now? \nIf you feel that you wish to participate in this campaign as a fundraiser please discuss with Natalie or Julian who will provide more information and help with any registration that may be required – this is necessary to ensure that any funds you raise go the right branch!

SUMMARY:Watchtree Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:N.B.  This is a rescheduling of an event that was originally planned for 20 June 2022. \nWatchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows\, old and new woodland\, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats this a place for everyone.  Wildlife is perfectly at home here and we have abundant Brown Hares\, the European protected Great crested Newt\, numerous breeding birds\, interesting moths\, stunning butterflies\, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore.  The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here.  More recently\, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains\, pumps and  containment walls.  So\, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven. \n \nThe Watchtree Wheelers provide cycle hire for all visitors to the Reserve and the huge collection of standard and adapted cycles means there is something for everybody.  You could cruise along in a KMX kart getting down to the same level as the hares and the stoats or hop on a trike so you can take in the landscape views over the tops of the bustling hedgerows. \n \n \nOn 18 July 2022 we will visit Watchtree Nature Reserve where members will have the opportunity to walk or cycle on the various pathways that run through this beautiful wildlife area.   \nWe will meet at Watchtree at 1pm.  Attendees are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy before\, during or after their walk/ride or can buy refreshments at the on-site Café. \nCost will be £2 a head\, payable in advance. \nThe Day Centre will be open for those members that do not wish to go to Watchtree. \nTo view photos from the last occasion that we visited as branch (8 July 2019) please visit the gallery and the photo album entitled Watchtree Nature Reserve.

SUMMARY:Platinum Jubilee Street Party
DESCRIPTION:The Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II is being celebrated in 2022 to mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952.  In the United Kingdom there will be an extra bank holiday and the usual Spring bank holiday will be moved from the end of May to the start of June to create a four-day Jubilee bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June 2022. \nOn Monday 6 June 2022 we will hold our own celebration in the form of a street party which will be held in the main hall of the New Waterton Hall.  We will meet from 1pm and hold our street party between 1:30pm and 3pm.  The event will be free for our members to attend. \n \n
